What “Wellness” Means To Me

For me personally, the term “wellness” is much more than regular exercise and healthy eating.

Like many others I believe that actual wellness involves the body, mind, and soul. It encompasses your spiritual, mental, emotional, and yes, physical state.

To me, wellness means striving to always be the best version of yourself across all aspects of what makes you sentient & more specifically, what makes you human.

I see wellness as a set of innocuous practices that keeps a person healthy, happy, and thriving. These practices should be implemented into your daily life and your future goals. When you care about your personal wellbeing and work hard at making it a priority, the opportunities are endless. The effort that goes into self-care, self-reflection, and self-love is time consuming but completely necessary if you seek self-awareness. When you are self-aware, you gradually become a better version of yourself and in turn, become a better partner, sibling, child, parent, coworker, and friend. It is my sincere belief that true self-awareness leads to peace of mind – and with peace of mind comes happiness – with happiness comes motivation – and with motivation comes success. And when I say “success,” I don’t mean financial wealth; I mean contentedness with one’s life.

Sorry if this all sounds completely esoteric, but I am definitely a firm believer in the power of embracing and understanding the whole self and constantly seeking knowledge when it comes to self-betterment.

MY WELLNESS STYLE

Here are a few ways that I practice wellness in my own life.

Physical

  • Getting outside by going to the beach, camping, and hitting up the tennis court or driving range
  • Exercising three to four times a week – I love going on long walks and doing pilates
  • Always trying to maintain a balanced and healthy diet
  • Taking care of my skin

Mental

  • Dedicating time to my favorite hobbies such as cooking, watching television, traveling, crafting, dining out, & hanging outdoors
  • Reading as much as I can – Fiction, Self-Help, & Funny Biographies are my favorite types of books
  • Spending quality time with friends & family
  • Doing the LA Times crossword
  • Helping out others

Spiritual

  • Meditating in a way that works for me which is doing activities in silence without the television or music blaring in the background & going on walks alone. I personally have never listened to music or podcasts while walking which may seem strange to many. I really do enjoy the sounds of nature and the ability to have some time alone with my own thoughts.
  • Staying mindful of my behavior and also the behavior of those around me.
  • Thanking and acknowledging the higher being I choose to believe in
  • Enjoying the beauty of mother earth & our surrounding universe
  • Recognizing and being thankful for my many blessings
  • Attending sound baths

Emotional

  • Taking the time to try and understand & also respect the emotions of my partner, friends, and family
  • Recognizing my feelings instead of running away from them
  • Working hard to not let my emotions get the best of me
  • Understanding how, why, and when I feel certain ways

SOME WELLNESS ADVICE

If going on a hike brings you zen – climb that hill. If reading a good novel incites joy – crack open that book. And if a calming bubble bath is the ultimate high – start soaking. Embrace what makes you happy, and take the time to fit those small pleasures into your week. Moments of happiness are vital for our wellbeing and should always be made a priority no matter how busy and chaotic our schedule.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

Wellness is a frame of mind and a lifestyle. We, alone, are in charge of how we choose to live. The stress and trials of life test our limits every day, but we all deserve love and happiness. Change starts from within so put in that effort, make time for self-care, treat others the way you’d like to be treated, go after your goals, and manifest your own destiny.
