Although Gua Sha and jade rolling have been around for centuries, their popularity has sky rocketed in the last five years especially among clean beauty and wellness fanatics. Facial massage via modern Gua Sha stones and jade rollers is an excellent way to promote blood flow and lymphatic drainage. Better circulation and regular detoxification within the face and neck achieved through consistent stone massage can often result in smoother, lifted, and brighter skin over time. Some folks think these ancient practices are a complete myth while others swear by it. I, personally, fall somewhere in the middle of this debate.

Due to constant tension in my neck and chronic sinus issues, facial & neck massage has been a part my life for decades just never as a beauty routine. However, in the last two years, I’ve come to throughly enjoy the relaxing and pampering effects of incorporating these elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) into my skincare routine. Both Gua Sha and jade rolling have definitely helped ease muscle tension in my face and neck and absolutely assist in clearing my lymphatic system. For those reasons alone, I absolutely stand by these tools.

I’m only 35-years-old so my skin is still pretty taut which makes it difficult to notice if any lifting or smoothing has taken place. I do, however, struggle with discoloration and uneven skin tone and am excited to see if continual use of these tools will assist in brightening those areas.

But enough about me, let’s talk tools. There are a lot of products on the market, but my brand of choice when it comes to gua sha stones and jade rollers is Primally Pure since their products are always of the highest quality. The icing on the cake is that all of their jade is sustainably sourced.

Yellow Nephrite Ridged Roller – I am completely obsessed with this tool from the beautiful color to the sturdy weight and the seamless rolling mechanism. Primally Pure carries three ridged rollers – yellow nephrite, rose quartz, and green jade. I chose the nephrite because of the stone’s association with optimism, good digestion, and emotional health. Regardless of whether or not you believe in the energy of this grounding gemstone – the tool in and of itself is phenomenal. The roller is incredibly easy to use and relieves so much tension in my jaw and neck. The handle is excellent at cooling and depuffing my under-eyes as well whenever I need a quick pick-me-up.

Gua Sha Stone – I was able to get my hands on this highly in-demand stone a few months after buying Primally Pure’s jade roller. I was so excited when it arrived but felt disappointed after first use. Compared to my beloved ridged roller, it took me a few solid weeks to get the hang of using this stone and to figure out how it worked best for me. After this initial trial & error period, I was hooked. The toothed edge and long smoother edge are my favorite sides, but I also enjoy the smaller curves to use along my jawline and the center of my face. The way it massages my neck, though, is the absolute best thing about this stone.

Stone & Roller Duo – If you are interested in purchasing both facial massage tools, I suggest taking advantage of this bundle! You will save $8.00 🙂 which in my opinion, is a great deal!

It’s important to always use these facial tools with your favorite oil or serum after properly cleansing your skin. Two of my favorite products from the Primally Pure collection are the Plumping Serum & the Fancy Face Serum. Both feel fabulous on my skin, and I love how just a few drops goes a long way. If you don’t have a go-to serum or prefer to save a bit of money – a 100% pure coconut, jojoba, or vitamin E oil works wonderfully as well in achieving that desired slip for the gemstone to properly slide against your skin.

Other than a good serum or oil, technique is also of great importance when using a gua sha stone and jade roller. The internet is flooded with videos on how to properly use these tools so I suggest hopping on YouTube and watching a few clips before getting started. Here are two videos from Primally Pure that display these standard methods of use.

If you are interested in exploring other brands of Gua Sha stones and jade rollers – The Detox Market has a great selection as well.

At the end of the day, facial Gua Sha and jade rolling will not remedy all of your skincare concerns. With regular use though, I do feel optimistic that both tools can probably help with tightening and smoothing skin – I’ll just have to wait and see if I notice a change in my more pronounced expression lines down the road. And as for brightening uneven skin tone, fingers crossed it helps because I definitely have my fair share of scarring that I would love to get rid of.

What I do know for sure is that both of these tools have helped me release muscle tension, promoted lymphatic drainage, increased circulation, and definitely made me feel relaxed. For those reasons alone, I absolutely think they’re worth a try 🙂
