SHEA MOISTURE CANNABIS SATIVA: Skincare Review

When my Ursa Major products were in their final stretch last summer, I was in a bind to quickly secure a new face wash, toner, and moisturizer before heading on the road to hunker down in Montana for a bit. As I’m sure you know, online orders were taking weeks to arrive so I needed to find a clean skincare option that was available via Target Pickup (my go to quarantine solution for all things non-grocery). After researching the available inventory of my local Targets, I settled on three items from Shea Moisture. I had purchased Shea Moisture’s Coconut Oil Body Lotion a year prior and liked it, so I figured their newer line of Cannabis Sativa products featuring hemp seed oil, witch hazel, and Vitamin E would work just fine. Keep on reading for my honest review.

Skin Rescue Cream Cleanser

  • The Verdict: As expected of most cream based cleansers, this is a very gentle face wash. Although the consistency is nice, I would prefer a bit more cleansing action. This product is technically unscented which is great for fans of fragrance-free skincare. It does, however, give off a less than pleasant medicinal aroma.

  • Target Clean: Yes, Indeed!

Skin Rescue Toner

  • The Verdict: First off, the sprayer is very aggressive. Secondly, this toner burned my eyes and left my face tingling in a bad way. After a few more attempts at spraying it directly on my face from a variety of distances, I started using it on a cotton round instead. I love witch hazel but wasn’t a fan of this formulation. And just like the cleanser, this product has a distinct medicinal aroma.

Skin Rescue Moisturizer

  • The Verdict: This cream easily absorbed into my skin and did quite a good job at moisturizing my face. Unfortunately, compared to the cleanser and the toner, that signature medicinal aroma was also present in this product and seemed to remain on my skin for much longer. For me, the smell was tolerable but obviously not something to write home about.

  • EWG Rating: 2

At the end of the day, I left these minimally used products with my boyfriend when I headed back to LA last September. He is still currently using them, doesn’t mind the medicinal scent at all, and enjoys the gentle yet effective quality of both the cleanser & the moisturizer. Fun Fact: He is no longer bothered by the toner, has figured out a spraying technique that works for him, and thinks the actual formula has become less stringent over time. So although I personally wouldn’t jump at the chance to use any of these products again, I can definitely see the Skin Rescue line working for anyone with sensitive or acne-prone skin. In my opinion, the best thing about these Cannabis Sativa infused products is that they are extremely affordable, fragrance-free, and easy to find. You can purchase them directly on the Shea Moisture website, at Target, many big-name drugstores, and even some grocery chains.
