I’ve exfoliated in the shower with all-natural loofahs and cloths since I was a teenager, but I only started dry brushing in 2020 at the age of 35. And now, years later, it’s become a regular part of my skincare routine. If you have yet to fall in love with this ancient practice, keep reading to find out why I enjoy the act of dry brushing so much and why you should too!
1. Dry Brushing Removes Dead Skin Cells
In terms of exfoliation, I find that the coarse, natural bristles of a dry brush work wonderfully at both quickly and efficiently sweeping away dead skin from the surface of my skin.
2. Dry Brushing Unclogs Pores
Once the initial layer of dead skin has been removed, I love that dry brushing helps at unclogging my most stubborn of pores. I struggle with Keratosis Pilaris in my upper arms, shoulders, and back and always notice a drastic difference in my KP after dry brushing since this simple exfoliation technique always removes the excess keratin gathering in those hard to reach hair follicles.
3. Dry Brushing Aids In Lymphatic Drainage
The circular motion of dry brushing from feet to chest and back downward is a great tool for lymphatic drainage since it’s gentle on the skin yet effective at flushing out excess fluid from body tissue. If you struggle with inflammation, you should absolutely give dry brushing a try.
4. Dry Brushing Promotes Circulation
In addition to lymphatic drainage, dry brushing stimulates nerve endings which in turn dilates blood vessels. The increase in blood flow brings nutrients towards the skin and creates a natural glow!
5. Dry Brushing Helps Reduce the Appearance of Cellulite
Other than producing a radiant glow, increased blood circulation to skin tissue generates a temporary plumping effect which means a smoothing out of those annoying dimples on the thighs and buttocks.
6. Dry Brushing Serves as a Form of Massage
I love a good massage, but a visit to the masseuse can be costly. As a result, I appreciate that the simple act of dry brushing relaxes my muscles and provides some of the same health benefits of deep tissue work in between trips to the spa.
7. Dry Brushing Is a Meditative Process
In addition to relaxing my muscles, the process of dry brushing also relaxes my mind. By repeating circular motions up and down your body, it’s easy to fall into a short meditative state where suddenly nothing else matters but the calming task at hand.
8. Dry Brushing Has Become a Self Care Ritual
I relish my daily face care routine and weekly hair care routine so adding dry brushing to my self care staples has been lovely. The benefits are absolutely worth the small effort it takes to dry brush once a week or even daily.
9. Dry Brushing Allows My Moisturizer to Sink in Better
I immediately shower after dry brushing, and once I’ve toweled off – I always make sure to moisturize. One of my favorite things about dry brushing is that because the process exfoliates so well, lotion absorbs so much more easily into my skin. I, oftentimes, will moisturize with a fancier body balm or butter on days that I dry brush so my skin will soak up more of the beneficial ingredients included in these quality creams.
10. Dry Brushing Leaves Me Feeling Refreshed & Invigorated
After I’ve thoroughly moisturized, I am not only left feeling relaxed but incredibly refreshed and invigorated as well. The stimulation of the coarse bristles truly leave the surface of my skin energized, fully awake, and ready to take on the world 😉
All said and done – I’m always so happy when I take the time to treat myself to a full body pampering and genuinely love how happy my skin feels after dry brushing!
