Good Soap by Alaffia – An Honest Review

After using Dove’s Original beauty bar for decades, I was ready to find a parfum-free alternative. Yes, I could have simply transitioned over to their Sensitive Skin body bar which is fragrance-free, conveniently sold at Costco, and quite affordable. However, I was eager to support a smaller brand that incorporated natural fragrances into their formulas since I still enjoy the aromatherapy effects of using a minimally scented soap in a hot shower. It’s no secret that quality items made by smaller companies cost an arm and a leg compared to products sold by giant corporations. However, after some searching – I soon discovered Good Soap by Alaffia – an affordable bar soap sold at Whole Foods.

I had walked past the Good Soap display countless times over the years during visits to Whole Foods, but it wasn’t until early 2022 that I noticed that the soap bars were affordably priced at 3 for $8.00 which comes out to $2.66 each before tax. In comparison to other clean brands like Dr. Bronner’s – the price was a steal so I picked up three bars. Since that day, I’ve been a loyal customer. Please note that prices have gone up slightly since first publishing this article in March 2023 and currently cost $3.00 a bar as of February 2026. However, when there’s a sale – you can snag individual bars for much less! In March 2026, the sale price was $2.40, and the Prime Discount price was $2.16 which is a steal since both cost less than the original 3 for 8 bucks deal!

GET TO KNOW GOOD SOAP

  • BIODEGRADABLE: This means that the formulas are free of harsh chemicals and break down quickly in the environment.
  • FAIR TRADE INGREDIENTS: An example would be the unrefined “raw” shea butter that Allafia uses in their soap bars.
  • GLUTEN-FREE: This is ideal for those with celiac disease.
  • NATURAL FRAGRANCES: Compared to many beauty products that contain synthetic “fragrance” or “parfum,” Alaffia only uses naturally derived essential oils and plant extracts to create their signature scents.
  • TRIPLE-MILLED: This means that the soap is pressed three times which allows the bar to lather well and last longer. And trust me, these bars definitely last a long time and lather up nicely!
  • ZERO WASTE: Good Soap is a plastic-free, unwrapped product that is displayed in bulk at Whole Foods. I love that you can smell every bar & use the recyclable bags pictured below to pack up your eco friendly soap.
  • GIVING BACK: In the past, Alaffia donated 100% of Good Soap proceeds to assist families and communities in Africa, the USA, and around the globe! They also worked with Whole Foods to build six Kindergartens in Togo! As of 2026, Alaffia will use a portion of their Good Soap sales to build deep water wells in West Africa by the year 2028. A FEW IMPORTANT THINGS WORTH NOTING

2. As of Winter 2026 – individual Good Soap bars were officially brought back to Whole Foods!! The formulas are slightly different, but the option to buy a single bar has been restored. Woohoo!

THESE ARE THE INDIVIDUAL GOOD SOAP BARS THAT I PURCHASED BEFORE THE 2024 DISCONTINUATION…

AVOCADO: Subtle Nutty Scent – Moisturizing
COCONUT: Subtle Sweet Scent – Moisturizing
LAVENDER: Delightful Floral Scent – Incredibly Relaxing
PACIFIC CITRUS: Subtle Citrus Scent – My Favorite Of The Bunch
PEPPERMINT: Invigorating Scent – Gently Exfoliating – The Bar I Buy Most Often

THESE ARE THE CURRENT, SINGLE BAR SCENTS AVAILABLE AFTER THE 2026 RELAUNCH…

CHERRY BLOSSOM: A sweet floral scent that I’m sure is similar to the original.
CITRUS: Not as good as the original pacific citrus bars but still my overall favorite of the bunch.
COCONUT COVE: A bit more sweet smelling in comparison to the original coconut bars.
GOLDEN MILK: The scent is sweet, warm, and a bit earthy.
LAVENDER BLOSSOM: A lot more floral than the original lavender bars.
MINT: Not as good as the original peppermint bars since the scent is a bit overdone for my taste.

I think the multipack scents may utilize the old formulas so if you enjoyed the subtly of the original Good Soap bars, the 4 Big Bars box may be a better buy.

  1. Thank you for writing this review. I was poking around to see if I could get information or if anyone else noticed what I noticed, and found you. I am so disappointed with whatever took place w/WF and Good Soap. What made GOOD SOAP good (natural scents, selection) is GONE, and replaced with sneezy floral and indeterminant but industrial scents. Let’s complete the crime and change the name (stating it ever so tritely, but correctly) to BAD SOAP.

    1. Hi Cpronchik,

I’m glad my updated review was helpful. It’s definitely, unfortunate, that the formulas have changed slightly with the relaunch of Individual Good Soap Bars. I think the best option for now would be to use the Fragrance-Free Multipack: https://www.alaffia.com/collections/good-soap-bars/products/good-soap-bar-soap-multipack-unscented or pay a bit more for Dr. Bronner’s. Sometimes they sell them bulk at Costco, but I’ve found the best price to be at Trader Joe’s. Best of luck finding a replacement product that works for you!

  3. Avocado was my absolute favorite and I can’t find it anywhere. Not even on Alaffia website. Beyond disappointing. Has anyone found the Avocado anywhere?

    1. Hi, Clarissa! Unfortunately – I think the Avocado may be discontinued as I’ve only seen the Unscented, Peppermint, Lavender, & Coconut at my local Whole Foods & on the Alaffia website. My suggestion would be to email Alaffia directly & to ask them to please bring back the other popular scents. I really loved the Pacific Citrus scent which is also no longer available 😦

  4. So disappointing! After years of trying every soap imaginable, I found Good Soap at Whole Foods. Does anyone know of any similar brands? They were great soaps with great scents at a decent price. Is it too much to ask for GOOD soap? (See what I did there???)

  5. I LOVE the Good bar soap too and I’ve been using it for several years. I needed more of them so I went to the Whole Foods store in Tulsa, OK, where I live and the company has changed it’s name and the Good bar soap is called something else and about half the size of what it used to be. I didn’t buy any. So sad!

    1. Sorry, Linda!! I hate that they are getting rid of the individually, unwrapped Good Soap across various Whole Foods. Was the new name under Alaffia because that is the company who makes Good Soap?

  6. So disappointed that the Whole Foods in Bellingham, WA, is no longer carrying this soap. :(. I asked today (10/12/2024) and they said no longer. What a shame.

    1. Oh darn! How frustrating. I will have to take a trip to Whole Foods this week to see if Good Soap is still available in my region of Southern California. And if not, I will be on the hunt for a comparable replacement, Barbara, & will be sure to write about it ASAP.

  7. Hi. My Whole Foods store in Massapequa NY is discontinuing Good soap. My husband and I both really love the lavender one and were upset to see that it’s being discontinued. Can you tell me where else I could purchase your lavender scented good soap? Thank you.

    1. Hi Lisa. I’m so sorry that your local Whole Foods is discontinuing the sale of Good Soap in your area. I know that my local Whole Foods started carrying less scents as well and began selling them in a 4-pack instead.

My best recommendation would be to email Alaffia directly [Service@Alaffia.com] to see if you can order Good Soap straight from them OR to just find out if it’s carried in any other stores near you.

Alaffia also sells a Shea Body Bar in a Lavender Scent that may be comparable to Good Soap. Here is the link from their website [https://www.alaffia.com/collections/soap-bars/products/s10025] AND an Amazon link that I found [https://www.amazon.com/Alaffia-EveryDay-Shea-Soap-Bar/dp/B0CCSY7132?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1]

      I hope this helps!
